7 Attractions in Fremantle (Perth) to Explore

Australia (Perth & Melbourne) Itinerary Overview (2013).

▲ Useful Tourist Information | ▲ Fremantle

Fremantle, Perth’s sea port, is a highly recommended place to visit if you are visiting Perth. It has also built a strong reputation for its microbreweries over the years. So have a seafood meal or fish and chips by the sea; and sample some boutique beer. Oh! You can get to buy fashionable clothes, original artworks and quirky gifts back home too. :)

1) ‘Cappuccino Strip’

Enjoy a cup of coffee along the famous bustling street. This is the place where you can go for fine dining, bars and socializing in Fremantle’s central business district. It is also a haven for street performance artists, musicians, small theater groups.

2) Fremantle Markets

Fremantle Markets (fremantlemarkets.com.au) seems to be one of the must go places in Fremantle. It’s a heritage architecture with rich history, where you can buy fresh local produce, organic goods, indigenous & independent products. Soak in the great music & atmosphere too!

Sat & Sun: 8am-6pm / 9am-6pm

3) Fremantle prison

Fremantle prison (www.fremantleprison.com.au) is the largest convict built structure in Western Australia. It is included on the World and National Heritage Lists. Decommissioned as a maximum-security gaol in 1991.  With death row, solitary cells and gallows, it is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.

Their tours, highly rated, include spine-chilling torchlight tours and ‘extreme heritage’ tunnels tour adventures. The reviews for the tours on tripadvisor are really good. But since I am on budget, I gave this a miss. :(

Prices and Opening Hours

Free Entry to the gatehouse, and visitor centre. Tours start from A$20.
The Gatehouse is open daily from 9.00am to 5.00pm

7) Rottnest Island:

It’s a short, but expensive, ferry ride from Fremantle. You might want to visit and cycle around the island. But, IMO, you can get similar nice white sandy beaches around Asia. So I skipped this place. But if you like to pop by, visit www.rottnestisland.com for more information.
